What is it?

Botox is a cosmetic procedure that stops nerve signals, typically the signals that tell your muscles to contract. What happens when these muscles are allowed to relax? The wrinkles in your skin will tighten thus temporarily disappear but this is not the only thing that Botox® helps.

Why else would you want to get Botox?

  • Cervical dystonia: You can rid yourself of this awful condition that causes your head to involuntarily twist and turn into uncomfortable positions due to your neck muscles contracting. This can be extremely painful.
  • Lazy eye: You have irregular visual perceptions but with Botox® you can get rid of your lazy eye.
  • Migraines: You have constant severe headaches, causing you extreme pain. Botox® can help lessen the frequency of migraines that you experience.
  • Muscle contractures: You can get rid of muscle contractures caused by a tightening of the joints due to your muscles laying in stiff positions after an illness or injury.
  • Hyperhidrosis: You may feel extremely hot and sweat excessively even though there are no situations directly causing this. You may have hyperhidrosis. Botox® can reduce the amount you sweat helping you to feel more confident and not self-conscious.
  • Eye Twitches: Do you have a twitch in your eyes? Keep your eyes from constant movement by getting Botox®.
  • Bladder Dysfunction: Do you lack the ability to control your bladder? Botox® can help reduce overactive bladder issues and urinary incontinence.

So, where can Botox be injected?

You can have Botox injected into the following areas of your face:

  • Around your mouth
  • Top of your nose
  • Forehead
  • Eyebrows
  • Around your eyes
  • Chin
  • Jaw
  • Neck

You may also choose to have Botox® administered into your back, feet or your armpits. If you are unsure if you can get Botox® for a specific area of your body, ask your physician for the dermatological areas where Botox® can offer some benefit.

How does Botox® work?

Your nurse will carefully administer a needle into your skin or the muscle area being treated. This needle will gently inject botulinum toxin, a neurotoxic protein. There is not usually any need for numbing before the procedure but you can choose to have this option if you are extremely nervous. Speak to your doctor about possible pre-procedure options for your comfort though it is good to note that Botox® is essentially pain-free. The treatment usually takes only about 10 to 15 minutes depending on where you are having it administered. If you are having several areas of your body done in the same appointment it may take a little longer. You can get on with the rest of your day in no time at all without the need for any recovery period.

When will you notice the results of your Botox®?

Generally, results start to appear in 3 days but full effects show up about 14 days later.

Is there after treatment for Botox®?

Yes, try to avoid rubbing the area to prevent the transfer of the botulinum toxin into another area in your body. Other than this, there is nothing you really need to avoid or be concerned with. It is best to avoid Botox® if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have a neurological disease. We want your Botox® treatment to be safe for you with the best possible outcome.

Is Botox® permanent?

No, this is a temporary procedure that lasts 3 to 5 months. If you want to maintain the benefits of your treatment then you will need to come back for regular visits. Repeated treatments mean longer-lasting effects so why not schedule a series of appointments during your initial visit? Note, for your safety, you should avoid getting treatments before your Botox® wears off.

Who can administer Botox®?

  • Medical doctors
  • Nurses
  • Dentists
